TV Land (“Younger,” “Teachers”) has ordered a script for a TV pilot based on the cult classic 1989 pitch-black comedy “Heathers”.
Daniel Waters’ original film centered on Veronica (Winona Ryder) and rebel boyfriend J.D. (Christian Slater) and their trials and tribulations dealing with the social order in high school – a vicious place ruled by the iron fist of three girls all named Heather. The film also spawned a well-regarded stage musical adaptation in recent years.
The new series is said to be a single camera dark comedy series set in the present day in which our heroine will be dealing with a very different but equally vicious group of Heathers.
One difference – characters who would’ve been outcasts in the 1980s version are the trio this time out – Heather McNamara is a black lesbian; Heather Duke is a male named Heath who identifies as “gender-queer”; and Heather Chandler “has a body like Martha Dumptruck”.
It is also, surprisingly, an anthology series ala “Fargo” and so each new season will sport a new group of ‘Heathers’ no matter what the setting. Jason Micallef (“Butter”) is penning the series which joins another big screen film turned TV series – “The First Wives Club” – in development at the network.
