John Turturro is set to self-distribute his $11 million musical “Romance & Cigarettes” after years of disputes says Reuters.
The over-the-top story line follows a Queens construction worker (James Gandolfini) who gets in trouble when his wife (Susan Sarandon) discovers he has a lusty mistress (Kate Winslet). The characters break into songs ranging from James Brown to Engelbert Humperdinck to Bruce Springsteen.
Steve Buscemi, Christopher Walken, Bobby Cannavale, Mandy Moore, Mary-Louise Parker, Aida Turturro, Elaine Stritch, Eddie Izzard and Amy Sedaris also star whilst the Coen brothers are attached as executive producers.
The film was shot in 2004 and scheduled for release by United Artists in 2005. When Sony Pictures merged with MGM however, the film got lost in the shuffle whilst festival screenings in 2005 yielded both a Golden Lion nomination in Venice, but some very mixed critical notices.
The film will now have an open-ended theatrical release Sept. 7 at New York’s Film Forum. The video rights now reside with Sony who has no plans to release the film on DVD until sometime next year.
