Scoring better reviews than its predecessor, but still not particularly good notices, Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows” hits cinemas this week and looks to sadly to not even come close to the first film’s box-office grosses.
The Wrap reports that the movie is on track to earn $37-40 million for its opening weekend, a steep drop from the $65.5 million the first film opened to just two years ago.
‘Shadows’ cost $135 million to produce, around $10 million more than the first film. It also faces the challenge of Pixar’s “Finding Dory” which opens next weekend and is said to be targeting the same family demographics.
The first film grossed almost $500 million worldwide, three-fifths of which came from overseas markets which will need to pick up the slack of softer U.S. results if the franchise is to continue.
Also opening this weekend is the Emilia Clarke-led “Me Before You” which is slated for a $14 million bow, and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” which is on track for just a $7 million opening.
