After an excellent start on Tuesday night, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” has unsurprisingly had the best opening day of 2011 thus far with the Michael Bay film taking in $37.2 million on Wednesday (including $8 million from midnight screenings) in North America.
That beats the $34.2 million that “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” earned on its opening day last month. It also saw 60% of admissions were for 3D screenings, which probably has some exhibitors sighing in relief after audiences this Summer have turned away in droves from post-conversion efforts in favour of 2D screenings.
Despite the higher ticket prices though, ‘Moon’ couldn’t come close to the enormous $62 million first day haul of the previous sequel ‘Revenge of the Fallen’.
UPDATE: July 1st: The third “Transformers” film pulled in $21.5 million for Thursday, giving it a two-day cume of $64.7 million.
