Transformers Has 2014’s Biggest Opening Day

So much for the bad critical reviews and soft Thursday previews.

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” turned grim forecasts around on Friday to score the biggest opening day of 2014. The Michael Bay-helmed sequel pulled in an estimated $41.6 million on Friday, which includes all preview and IMAX screenings.

Compare that to the opening day hauls of the two biggest openers of the year so far – “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” with $36.9 million and “Godzilla” with $38.4 million, and those both had bigger ‘preview’ night hauls.

The debate now rages as to how close the film will get to cracking the $100 million mark for its opening weekend. The final results will be revealed on Monday morning.
