Trailer: Park Chan-Wook’s “The Handmaiden”

Films rarely get stranger than “Oldboy” and “Stoker” director Park Chan-Wook’s newest effort “The Handmaiden”. On the surface it seems like a standard period piece, but dig deeper and you’ve got something insanely pulpy with lashings of double and triple crosses, graphic lesbian sex, and even a dash of hentai.

Based on the book “The Fingersmith,” the story follows a woman who is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her. The South Korean filmmaker’s work played at Cannes and in Sydney recently to very colorful reviews and has been picked up by Amazon Studios with plans for a theatrical release through Magnolia Pictures on October 14th.
