In one of the more unexpected pieces of casting news of late, British paper The Sun reports that Tom Hardy is being sought to play the villain Jafar in Guy Ritchie’s live-action remake of 1992 animated classic “Aladdin” at Disney Pictures.
Right before he broke through big with the likes of “Bronson” and “Inception,” Hardy was cast in the key role of gay gangster Handsome Bob in Ritchie’s 2008 British crime comedy “RocknRolla”. The source for the paper says:
“Guy is a huge fan of Tom’s work and securing him would be a major coup. There have been conversations and, although nothing is set in stone and things are subject to change, he’s certainly one of Guy’s favoured choices. It just depends on schedules whether he’ll be able to sign up.”
The film is set to keep the musical element of the original, which means Hardy may be required to sing. Will Smith is presently in negotiations to play Genie, the only major casting announcement so far beyond an apparent worldwide search for two actors of Middle Eastern descent for Aladdin and Jasmine.
