Tom Hanks Reads The “News of the World”

“Lion” writer Luke Davies is adapting Paulette Jiles novel “News Of The World” into a feature star vehicle for Tom Hanks which is being set up at Fox 2000 and Playtone.

Set in 1870, the story revolves around a road trip through the untamed West taken by unlikely traveling partners – a Texan named Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd who spreads news to small towns who don’t have access, and a ten-year-old white girl whose family was killed by the Kiowa Indian tribe four years before and who didn’t want to be rescued from kidnap.

The two form a bond through their harrowing adventure that includes revelations for Kidd. While he’s educated and worldly, he can see newspapers are becoming widely available and realizes he will be a relic of another time.

Gail Mutrux, Gary Goetzman and Hanks are producing.
