Tom Hanks is attached to star in the film based on the upcoming memoir of Captain Richard Phillips reports Variety.
The film will retell the events that garnered headlines worldwide in April 2009 when his cargo ship, the Maersk Alabama, was hijacked on the high seas off the Somali coast.
Hanks will play Phillips, a married father of two, who surrendered himself to the pirates in order to protect his crew. He made one unsuccessful escape attempt before an elite squad of Navy SEAL snipers shot and killed three of the four pirates.
Billy Ray (“Hunger Games”) will pen the script, while Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca, Scott Rudin and Kevin Spacey will produce.
