In surprising news, Tom Cruise is in talks to star in the reboot of “The Mummy at Universal Pictures says Variety.
Jon Spaihts is penning the script which is set in present day, but plot specifics are being kept vague. Cruise isn’t expected to produce, but he will play a major part in development.
Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are behind the project and the initiative which will see them shepherding a cinematic universe that will use and mingle characters from Universal’s classic monster movie library. Kurtzman will direct and both will produce this particular outing.
Universal is not commenting on casting reports regarding the project at this time. Part of the reason for Cruise’s involvement is scheduling. He is currently filming “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” and was to shoot Doug Liman’s “Luna” early next year ahead of a “Mission: Impossible 6” shoot in August.
With Liman’s “Luna” on hold due to the director’s commitment to film “Gambit” in the Spring, Cruise had a pre-MI6 opening which he’ll now fill with “The Mummy”.
UPDATE: Well that didn’t last long. Deadline now reports that both Universal and Cruise’s reps are adamant that no deal with Cruise is in the works for the film.
