“The Hangover” director Todd Phillips has talked about the John Belushi biopic he was reportedly linked to last month, telling MTV News the project is still “in its very nascent stages” and thus a long way off.
“Our goal is to capture the spirit of Belushi, not necessarily make a straight-ahead biopic” he says, citing “Ray” and “Walk the Line” as ‘traditional’ models of a biopic. He hopes “to make a movie that, if John Belushi saw it, he would be happy that it captured his spirit… We’re trying to take a very renegade approach to who I think was one of the most renegade comedy actors of all time.”
No eye has been turned toward casting yet and nothing is being ruled out. Scribe Steve Conrad (“The Pursuit of Happyness”) is presently still at work on a story treatment with Phillips, with work on the script itself still some way off. Finally, Phillips adds that they “haven’t nailed it yet” in regards to their ‘renegade approach’.
