Tim Burton Tells “Maleficent” Tale

With his planned film version of gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows” hitting road blocks, Tim Burton’s first post-“Alice in Wonderland” project might be something unexpected.

AICN reports that Burton is interested in making a live-action feature based on the villainous Maleficent from Disney’s 1959 fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty”. Much like the musical “Wicked” which retold L. Frank Baum’s classic story from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West, Burton’s film will apparently tell ‘Beauty’ from Maleficent’s point of view.

Though it’s beautiful artwork was praised, as a film ‘Beauty’ didn’t score the praise of some of its more well-praised predecessors (ala. “Snow White”). A recurring comment in many reviews of the recent ‘Beauty’ Blu-ray was that Maleficient was easily the most interesting character of the story.

Further details on the project have yet to be revealed but it would be distributed by Disney where Burton just did ‘Alice’.
