Thrones Used Body Double For Walk

Along with some notable deaths, last night’s fifth season finale of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” also included one of the book series’ most iconic moments – Cersei’s walk of shame.

Forced to walk naked from the Great Sept to the Red Keep, a shorn Cersei (Lena Headey) walks through crowded streets as crowds hurl excrement, rotten food and insults at her. The sequence goes on for several minutes during which the cold-hearted Queen Mother breaks down.

It’s a stellar performance scene for Headey, and a brave one. Whilst quite a few eagle eyed viewers already spotted it, others might be surprised to learn that Headey in fact didn’t get naked during the scene. EW confirms that Headey, who has appeared nude on film before and was pregnant at the time of the scene’s filming, opted to employ a body double for the famous walk.

The sequence combined plenty of above the shoulders close-ups of Headey herself, distance and back shots which were played by a double without visual effects, and frontal shots with Headey’s face CG-ed onto the double’s body.

Talking about filming the scene, Headey says: “It’s not hard when people are screaming at you and you look like shit and you’re being f–king humiliated to figure out how that would feel. There’s a part of you that’s f–king terrified. I can’t even imagine people wanting your blood. Cersei has done wrong, but she doesn’t really deserve this.”

Show runner David Benioff says: “Some of those shots we got, some of those close-ups, she had to go to a dark place to get the right emotion. It’s incredibly compelling yet you almost want to turn away because you’re looking at someone who’s suffering.”
