“Thrones” Producer Plans “Empress” Series

“Game of Thrones” producer Christopher Newman has signed a deal with Starlight Media and K.Jam Media to develop and produce the lavish thirteen-episode period drama series “Empress”.

The story will center on Wu Zetian, the only female empress in the history of China and a woman who ruled during the Tang dynasty (618-906 A.D.).

The series will follow her ascent from being the favorite concubine of Emperor Tai Tsung to ultimately her own rise to power as a ruthless, cunning political force to be reckoned with.

Starlight Media will fully finance the $70 million series and will shop the project to broadcast networks after filming has been completed.

Newman, Xu Yan, Peter Luo, Kia Jam and Beely Lee will executive produce. Filming gets underway late next year in Sichuan, China ahead of a 2018 release.
