Update (3/12): Bayona has officially gotten the job according to Variety.
With “Eclipse”, the third movie in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” franchise scheduled to begin production later this year for a Summer 2010 release, the important question of who will direct the project has come into play in recent weeks.
The likes of Drew Barrymore and James Mangold have been mentioned, the former thought to be the front runner until this week when two further names came into play – Paul Weitz and Juan Antonio Bayona.
Weitz is the brother of “The Golden Compass” director Chris Weitz who is helming the second “Twilight” movie “New Moon”. The pair co-directed “About a Boy,” “Down to Earth” and “American Pie”. The Twilighters seems pretty certain he’s got the gig.
Bayona, a protege of Guillermo del Toro, directed 2007’s creepy Spanish language ghost flick “The Orphanage” and is currently signed on to direct the dystopian thriller “Hater” for Universal.
