HBO’s “Sex and the City” is long over, the franchise has seemingly closed its legs with the 2010 film sequel even as Carrie Bradshaw and her trio of friends remain a staple of pop culture.
At one point a third film was in the works but when actress and scatting expert Kim Cattrall (who plays Samantha Jones) departed the project, the film’s development stalled and never got going again.
With the film now an impossibility, some details of what was proposed have begun to leak out. THR’s Origins podcast reports that the storyline revolved around the fate of series heartthrob Mr. Big (Chris Noth), Carrie’s main love interest, who dies of a heart attack in the shower relatively early on in the film.
As a result, much of the film is about how Carrie recovers from Big’s death rather than about the relationship between the four women like the previous films – which is apparently a key reason why Cattrall exited because the film offered the character of Samantha very little to do.
Carrie and Big’s on again-off again relationship spanned all of the show’s seasons and both films and remains the biggest love story element of the franchise.
