The “Firestarter” Remake Scores A Director

Having won the Golden Bear for “Head On” and more recently the Golden Globe for the Diane Kruger-led “In the Fade,” filmmaker Fatih Akin is now headed to the U.S. market with the new film adaptation of Stephen King’s pyrokinetic novel “Firestarter” at Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions.

Based on King’s classic novel, the story follows a young girl who develops abilities to telepathically cause spontaneous combustion and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon.

Akin will direct the project from a script by Scott Teems while Jason Blum and Akiva Goldsman will produce. Martha de Laurentiis, an associate producer on the 1984 film adaptation with Drew Barrymore, will executive produce.
