The Experiment Goes Direct To DVD

“The Experiment”, the American remake of Oliver Hirschbiegel’s 2001 German thriller “Das Experiment” that Sony Pictures produced last year, will go straight-to-DVD.

Despite the presence of Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker, the subject matter was likely to difficult a sell theatrically. The recent failure of “Splice” and “Repo Men”, edgy violent genre fare starring Brody and Whitaker respectively, was also a potential factor.

As a result Sony is opting to put the film out directly through its home entertainment division on DVD and Blu-ray on September 21st.

Based on a real-life incident at Stanford University in 1971, the story revolves around several dozen men who, as part of a scientific experiment, are chosen to simulate the roles of prisoners and guards to test the psychological effects of power and authority. Within less than a week things got so out of hand that the experiment was cancelled.
