Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group is teaming with MRC to co-finance an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel series “The Dark Tower”.
Several years ago, both Universal and then Warners attempted an ambitious combination of a film trilogy and a two-season limited series based on the eight book saga. The project ultimately fell apart due to financing issues.
Sony’s plan calls for a series of movies, how many is not indicated, along with a complementary TV series. Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner, who penned the script for the previous version, have reportedly re-conceived and come up with a whole new script primarily based on the first book in the series “The Gunslinger”.
Sony and MRC will soon go out to filmmakers with this script, and intend to fast track the project. Goldsman, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins will produce.
In a statement, King says: “I’m excited that The Dark Tower is finally going to appear on the screen. Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books.”
