The Crow Reboot Helmer Tackles “The Ring 3”

F. Javier Gutierrez, the filmmaker behind the upcoming “The Crow” reboot with Luke Evans, has been tapped to direct the next installment in the dormant “The Ring” franchise at Paramount Pictures.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” series director Gore Verbinski directed the 2002 first film which was based on the popular Japanese supernatural hit “Ringu”. The storyline revolved around a mysterious videotape that, when watched, kills the viewer a week after the person has watched it. Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson and Brian Cox starred.

“The Ring” became a hit, scoring good critical notices and $249 million at the global box-office. A subsequent sequel, helmed by “Ringu” director Hideo Nakata, proved a dud with critics and managed only $160 million worldwide.

Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are returning as producers, but it is unknown if series star Watts will return. It has been suggested this could be a prequel though which would prevent that occurrence.
