Joel and Ethan Coen have been hired to pen the thriller “Dark Web” for 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment, taking over the duty from “Shutter Island” and “Gone Baby Gone” author Dennis Lehane.
The film will be based on Wired’s 2013 article about Ross William Ulbricht (aka Dread Pirate Roberts), the man who built the hidden online marketplace known as Silk Road. Customers could order every illegal drug imaginable (and more), so long as they had plenty of Bitcoin which was used as the currency to complete transactions. Ulbricht quickly became a target for the authorities.
Whether this could be a project they might direct is unclear at this point. No helmer is yet onboard and it sounds as if they have yet to make a decision either way. Joshuah Berman, Joshua Davis, Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping are producing.
