It was the Producers Guild last night, tonight the Screen Actors Guild held its 23rd annual SAG Awards in Los Angeles.
The film acting awards had some surprises. The ensemble cast award went to “Hidden Figures” rather than “Moonlight,” Denzel Washington beat frontrunner Casey Affleck to take best actor for “Fences,” and Emma Stone surprised with a win for best actress for “La La Land.” In the supporting categories though the front runners stayed in place with Mahershala Ali for supporting actor for “Moonlight” and Viola Davis for supporting actress in “Fences”.
On the TV front, Netflix was easily the big winner. The streamer’s “Stranger Things” won best ensemble cast for a drama series and its “Orange is the New Black” took home the ensemble cast for a comedy series award. Also John Lithgow and Claire Foy scored the best actor and actress in a drama series for their work in “The Crown”.
Outside of Netflix, William H. Macy and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss took home honors for best actor and actress in a comedy series for “Shameless” and “Veep” respectively, while Bryan Cranston and Sarah Paulson won best actor and actress in the telemovie and limited series category for “All the Way” and “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” respectively.
“Hacksaw Ridge” and “Game of Thrones” won for the best stunt ensembles on film and TV respectively. Lily Tomlin took home the Lifetime Achievement Award.
