Terrence Malick’s “Song” Loses Bale, Gets Tracklist

Filmmaker Terrence Malick is forgoing one element of his usual repertoire of tricks for the upcoming Austin music scene romance drama “Song to Song”. Namely classical scores.

Pitchfork has a breakdown of the film’s soundtrack which confirms that performances by Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine, and Fleet Foxes didn’t make the final cut following Malick’s usual severe editing phase. That ruthlessness has also seen actor Christian Bale’s being ditched from the feature.

Those who are on screen though include Swedish pop star Lykke Li in a significant role as Ryan Gosling’s ex. Also onboard are Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Lydon, Alan Palomo who have speaking roles, while Diplo, Tegan and Sara, Florence Welch, Big Freedia, and Spank Rock also appear.

The soundtrack features, among others, the likes of Die Antwoord, Bob Dylan, the Plasmatics, Julianna Barwick, Meredith Monk, Gyptian, Sharon Van Etten, and Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears.
