Channing Tatum may not be playing the “X-Men” mutant Gambit after all. Tatum spoke of his love for the role for some time and was set for a standalone “Gambit” film from 20th Century Fox a while back.
A few months ago “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” director Rupert Wyatt came onboard to direct and an October 2016 release date was locked in. At last report around Comic Con a few weeks ago, things seemed to be progressing smoothly and production has been in the process of testing young actresses for the female lead including “Spectre” actress Lea Seydoux.
Today comes a report from the The Wrap which says Tatum’s deal is in jeopardy of falling apart and he is planning to exit the project. Another source says that though Tatum’s reps are still in active discussions with the studio, they acknowledged that “something is up”.
If Tatum opts out of starring, it’s unclear whether he and his producing partner Reid Carolin plan to remain involved in a producing capacity. If not, it’s also uncertain whether Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner will move forward on their own.
