Last month came the news that Taika Waititi will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the helm of “Thor: Love & Thunder,” the fourth film in the series and the follow-up to Waititi’s own “Thor: Ragnarok”.
Waititi has World War II satire “Jojo Rabbit” hitting this Fall via Fox Searchlight, and was slated to direct the live-action “Akira” remake at Warners before putting that on hold to work on the new “Thor” for Disney. With ‘Love and Thunder’ not expect to begin shooting until next August though, Waititi isn’t going to rest on his laurels.
Variety reports that he and Searchlight are teaming up again for a new ‘secret’ non-tentpole film which Waititi will write and direct. The untitled film apparently had its script finished recently with the studio jumping aboard immediately in order to get it into production by this Fall.
Waititi will film it in the back half of this year, work on post-production on it and pre-production on “Thor: Love and Thunder” simultaneously, and then go off to film “Thor”. Plot specifics of the Searchlight film are under wraps, but a late 2020 release seems likely.
