“Sword Art Online” Gets A Live-Action TV Series

Skydance Media has acquired the TV rights and has fast tracked plans for a potential live-action TV series based on Reki Kawahara’s popular Japanese novel and anime franchise “Sword Art Online”.

“Terminator Genisys” scribe Laeta Kalogridis is penning the pilot for the project which would be the first-ever live-action television series for the franchise despite having generated a game, two anime shows, nine comic adaptations, an animated feature and a merchandise program.

Skydance Television and KADOKAWA Corporation will co-produce the project which follows a brilliant young beta tester and his group of friends who are trapped alongside 10,000 other people in a next-generation virtual reality online role-playing game. Monsters, magic and sword fighting ensue.

As part of the series, a tie-in virtual reality experience through Skydance Interactive will be produced.
