In just five days of release, the new “Super Mario Odyssey” game for the Nintendo Switch has sold more than 1.1 million units in the U.S. alone.
That makes it the fastest-selling game so far for Nintendo Switch, and the fastest-selling Super Mario game ever in the U.S. – surpassing the “New Super Mario Bros. Wii” game which was released in 2009.
The game scored an utterly stellar 97/100 on Metacritic, putting it on par with Nintendo Switch’s launch game “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for potential game of the year honors.
Production of the Nintendo Switch has been increased to meet demand through the holidays as Nintendo has been expecting to run into supply issues leading up to Black Friday. Projections are that the Switch will sell 16.7 million units in its first year of release – on pace to exceed lifetime sales of the Nintendo Wii U.
