“Suicide Squad” Sets Thursday August Record

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Suicide Squad” film opened in North American theaters last night and pulled in $20.5 million in opening night ticket sales.

That marks the highest Thursday pre-show ever for the month of August, surpassing the $11.2 million made by Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” two years ago. “Guardians of the Galaxy” went on to earn $94.3 million in its first weekend, a number that ‘Squad’ is expected to easily trash.

Internationally the film is also going gangbusters, grossing $29.6 million in 40 international markets in its first two days and well on its way to a $100 million+ overseas opening weekend. The film opened in first place in 33 territories on Thursday where it had huge market share – including 93% of all ticket sales in Russia and 74% in Australia.
