Suicide Squad Cast Talk Their Characters

Following on from all those fresh photos from David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” movie this morning, further details from Empire’s feature piece on the project have gone online with the film’s various cast members discussing their characters.

Chief amongst them is Jared Leto opening up for the very first time about playing The Joker in the film and during the production shoot. Leto famously never broke character during the shoot which led to him tormenting his fellow cast members:

“There was definitely a period of…detachment. I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole.

I always get the sense that The Joker may be much older than people think. It’s something different. If you don’t break rules, you’re not going to strike new ground. I think I’ll be cooling down for the rest of my life.”

Leto also revealed he listened to 1920s gospel music and read literature on shamans for the role. The film’s producer says Leto’s outfits have been inspired by Mexican cartels. Also one major change from previous screen representations of the character is that, according to producer Chuck Roven he is: “More social…a very successful and smart businessman besides being a sociopath.”

The feature keeps details of the film’s plot under wraps, but one scene gets a closer examination. In said clip, Deadshot, Diablo, Boomerang, Slipknot, Harley Quinn, and Killer Croc are onboard a Chinook helicopter with a small cadre of Navy SEALs. Also there is Rick Flag and his bodyguard Katana who volunteered for the mission, wth Flag revealing that Kitana’s “sword traps the souls of its victims.”

Also in the scene, Killer Croc vomits up chunks of half digested goat meat and then eats it again which makes the SEALs recoil – mostly because Ayer hadn’t warned the SEAL actors ahead of time. Many of the main actors also offer up a quote about their respective character:

Katana (Karen Fukuhara): “She has morals and codes. She’s can also slice through hundreds of people without taking a breath.”

Slipknot (Adam Beach): “He’s formidable. He can climb anything. And he hangs people for a living. I joke that he was caught strangling Wonder Woman. I downloaded this app called Grog Knots. Now I could tie up a horse.”

Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang): “He’s an absolute bogan, in the purest sense. Dave’s first instruction was, ‘Find your inner shitbag.'”

Jay Hernandez (Diablo): “Most of these guys are happy to get out there and kill people, but he just wants to stay out of the fight.”

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc): “He’s a cannibal with rage issues. Although he only eats the most talented people. He’s picky.”

Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg): “Flag is the highest level operator working for the government. He’s had lots of friends die and has killed many, many people. Deadshot gives him the most problems. Harley is easily distracted, but up for following orders if it means destroying things.”

“Suicide Squad” opens next Summer.
