Just hours after the latest reports indicating final talks are underway, Warner Brothers Pictures has now officially announced the cast of its “Suicide Squad” movie and confirmed which characters each actor will play.
No surprises as to the names onboard as all have previously been rumored, but the biggest news is Will Smith is confirmed to be onboard and in the role of the assassin Deadshot. Australian actor Jai Courtney was previously rumored for the Deadshot role but will actually play the more suitable Boomerang.
Also set are Tom Hardy as team leader Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Joker’s sidekick Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as the sorceress Enchantress and Jared Leto as The Joker himself.
Despite reports, Jesse Eisenberg is not part of the official team or the official cast, but this doesn’t rule out a potential cameo appearance by him or other actors already slated to be a part of the DC Cinematic Universe that Warners is constructing.
In an official statement, Warner Bros. exec Ben Silverman says: “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote Training Day and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
Still to be cast though is the key role of Amanda Waller, the team’s handler. Whilst no mention of this role was made in the announcement, Variety reports that the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer are being eyed for the part.
David Ayer is writing and directing “Suicide Squad” which begins filming in April in Toronto.
