STX To Release “Valerian,” “Circle” & More

STX Entertainment has closed a three year deal with EuropaCorp Films USA to release and market their upcoming films, the highest profile being Luc Besson’s $180 million sci-fi comic adaptation “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” which opens July 21st.

The most fiscally and creatively ambitious film in Besson’s career, “Valerian” is the first of four titles announced as part of the deal with STX handling the U.S. domestic release.

Also on the schedule is James Ponsoldt’s “The Circle” starring Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, and John Boyega; the Lone Scherfig-directed WW2 romantic dramedy “Their Finest” starring Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin and Bill Nighy; and Steven Quale’s visceral heist tale “Renegades” starring Sullivan Stapleton and J.K. Simmons.

STX’s chairman Adam Fogelson worked at Universal several years ago and was a big reason behind the success of Besson’s “Lucy” in the United States.
