Lionsgate, China’s Infinity Pictures/CMC and Yue Hua Entertainment Culture Communications are closing a deal which will see the “Step Up” dance film franchise take a whole new direction.
The plan is for the sixth film in the franchise to be a Chinese-language sequel as the series has been very popular in Asia, meaning this made-for-the-Middle-Kingdom effort should far even better. Action choreographer and second unit director Ron Yuan will helm the project with an all-Chinese cast.
Li Wei will pen the film which will incorporate a martial arts aspect into all the colorful footwork – so roundhouse kicks merging into twerking? Dede Nickerson and Du Hua will produce.
Shooting kicks off in Beijing and Los Angeles on December 9 for release next year in Greater China. The dance series has been quite cheap to produce and has yielded over $600 million in worldwide box office for Lionsgate.
