Less than a day after it was announced that frequent “Fast and Furious” film director Justin Lin has been brought in to take the helm of the third “Star Trek” film, news comes today that Paramount Pictures has announced a July 8th 2016 release date for the next chapter in the rebooted film series.
Right now there’s no competition for that release slot, though Spielberg’s “The BFG” & David Yates’ “Tarzan” open the week before, and “Ice Age 5” and the Damon/Greengrass ‘Bourne’ reunion open the following week.
The news confirms the studio is on track to release the film to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original “Star Trek” TV series. Lin takes over from the previously linked Roberto Orci who remains onboard as producer. No word as yet if his script with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay has been entirely ditched as rumours suggest.
