James Gunn and much of his cast from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” popped up at the San Diego Comic Con last night to show off rapturously received first footage from the sequel.
The story will pick up two months after the first film ended. While the first was about the creation of a new family with this group, Gunn says the second is about them “being a family” which is much harder. The big additions to the cast are Pom Klementieff as Mantis and Kurt Russell, who plays Star-Lord’s father – Ego the Living Planet. Speaking of their inclusion, Gunn says:
“Kurt’s character is an incredibly important role… For me, he was the center – his character, even before he was around – was the center of what this movie was. We had a great camaraderie on the first film, but when Kurt and Pom started coming around, it seemed even better.”
Sylvester Stallone reportedly has a role in the film as a member of Nova Corps, effectively making this a “Tango and Cash” reunion. A clip and a trailer were screened with the money shot being Russell’s Ego explaining how he took human form but added some flourishes. Drax asks if he made a penis, to which Russell’s character says: “I sure did… it’s not bad either.”
A theme park ride based on the first film is also coming to Disneyland. The current ‘Tower of Terror’ is being replaced with “Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT,” a new ride in which The Collector has trapped the Guardians in customized display cases suspended over a vast abyss. The intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting guests to help him attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.
“Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2” opens next May, while the theme park ride will open its doors sometime next Summer.
