One of the more surprising announcements of late was that FOX had come onboard “Rambo: New Blood,” a TV series continuation of the “Rambo” franchise. Said project would deal with John Rambo and the relationship with J.R., his son and an ex-Navy SEAL.
The project has been in the works for some time with production companies Entertainment One and Millennium Films previously stating they were in negotiations with Sylvester Stallone to executive produce and reprise his role in the project. That is no longer the case, Stallone’s representatives telling Deadline today:
“Contrary to reports, Sylvester Stallone has opted not to participate in the planned Rambo television series in any way at all. I wish the others well with the project.”
Without Stallone, there’s a big question now as to whether FOX will go forward with the series. The network is still going forward though with an event series based on “The Expendables” franchise with both Stallone and Millennium’s Avi Lerner attached as executive producers. Shane Brennan (“NCIS: LA”) will serve as showrunner.
Lerner and Stallone worked on 2008’s “Rambo” and were developing a fifth and final feature together entitled “Rambo: Last Blood” which seems to have stalled.
