Spotlight Sweeps The Spirit Awards

The last of the pre-Oscars major awards ceremonies, The Independent Spirit Awards, were handed out on Saturday night and Tom McCarthy’s journalist drama “Spotlight” dominated the proceedings – taking home five honors including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing and the Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble Cast, Casting Directors and Director.

In the acting categories Brie Larson took Best Actress for “Room,” Mya Taylor scored Best Supporting Actress for “Tangerine,” and both Abraham Attah and Idris Elba took Best Actor and Supporting Actor respectively for their work in “Beasts of No Nation”.

Other winners included “Son of Saul” for Best International Film, “The Look of Silence” for Best Documentary, “Carol” for Best Cinematography, “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” for Best First Feature, and “Room” for Best First Screenplay.
