“Spotlight” director Tom McCarthy is following an ever increasing trend it seems – jumping onboard a new Netflix original series as executive producer and director.
McCarthy will helm the first two episodes of a TV series adaptation of Jay Asher’s 2007 novel “13 Reasons Why” which Anonymous Content will produce. Originally conceived as a feature film, the project will now become a thirteen episode limited series for the streaming service.
In the novel, Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker – his classmate and crush – who committed suicide two weeks earlier.
On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll learn how he made the list. Selena Gomez, Manda Teefy, and Kristel Laiblin will also executive produce.
Despite Gomez’ involvement, the actress is not attached to star at this time.
