SpongeBob Soars, “Jupiter” & “Son” Bomb

With a whopping $56 million haul, it comes as no surprise that “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” easily topped the box-office this weekend with the animated adventure knocking “American Sniper” out of the top spot.

Meanwhile the Wachowski’s ambitious space opera “Jupiter Ascending” and the swashbuckling fantasy tale “Seventh Son” both bombed hard. The $179 million-budgeted ‘Jupiter’ pulled in just $19 million in its opening weekend, whilst the $95 million budgeted ‘Son’ made a miserable $7.1 million for the weekend.

Both of those films scored terrible reviews, “Jupiter Ascending” nabbing just 22% (4.1/10) on Rotten Tomatoes whilst “Seventh Son” fared even worse with 10% (3.9/10). ‘SpongeBob’ in contrast scored 75% (6.3/10). “American Sniper” continues doing robust business with the Clint Eastwood-directed film having reached a $282 million domestic haul so far.

In spite of the two bombs, the box-office for this year is up by a whopping 10% on the same time last year thanks to surprise successes like ‘Sniper,’ ‘Spongebob’ and “Paddington”. This coming Friday’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Kingsman” are expected to only continue that trend.
