Spielberg To Do “Ready Player One” Next

With so many potential projects on his plate and in development, getting Steven Spielberg to lock down his immediate next film to direct often seems to be a very difficult task.

Today though it seems like he’s finally figured out what’s next with the announcement today that he’s set to make the science fiction adventure “Ready Player One” with Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and DreamWorks locking it in for a December 15th 2017 release date.

Based on the Ernest Cline novel, the story follows a teenager named Wade Watts who becomes immersed in a virtual reality world known as Oasis which enables users to live out their dream lives. When the game’s creator suddenly dies, Wade enters an elaborate treasure hunt, where the winner will take control of the entire company.

The teenager soon finds himself up against corporate entities who will do anything to take over the company. Various 1980s pop culture references feature heavily in the work and are expected to be carried over to the film.

Zak Penn wrote the script while Donald De Line, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce.
