Filmmakers Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams are teaming to produce a film based on the real-life story of Syrian refugee Doaa Al Zamel for Paramount Pictures and Amblin Partners.
Based on Melissa Fleming’s just-published nonfiction book “A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea,” the story follows a Syrian woman who fled Egypt for a new life in Sweden. Shipwrecked with two small children, she survived for days with them in her arms on an inflatable water ring.
Fleming, the chief spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, penned the book following a ton of research into Doaa’s story. No writer or director is currently attached to the project.
