Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” opens this weekend and is riding high on a wave of superb reviews and a potential opening weekend haul of around $35-40 million in the U.S. alone.
As a result, producer Amy Pascal reports Sony plans to gear up sequels and spin-offs sooner rather than latter she tells Vanity Fair. First up will be the sequel which will more heavily involve supporting character Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld).
Pascal says the sequel will explore a romance between the two and also serve as a launching pad for a “Spider-Women” spin-off focusing on Spider-Gwen, Cindy Moon (a.k.a. Silk) as Jessica Drew (a.k.a. Spider-Woman). Bek Smith is penning that film.
Joaquim Dos Santos (“Avatar: The Last Airbender,” “Voltron”) is helming the “Spider-Verse” follow-up from a script by David Callaham (“Wonder Woman 1984,” “Zombieland 2”),.
