Spider-Man Wants Deschanel, Gets Parents

Zooey Deschanel is being sought for the role of Betty Brandt in the upcoming “Spider-Man” reboot for Sony Pictures reports Showbizspy.

Director Marc Webb worked with Deschanel on “(500) Days of Summer” and has big plans for the character, the sexy personal assistant of Daily Bugle boss J. Jonah Jameson whom Elizabeth Banks portrayed in the three previous “Spider-Man” films.

An insider says “Marc Webb has big plans for her. He wants a strong performer to carry the role and Zooey Deschanel fits the bill perfectly. The role is hers if she wants it.”

The role is one of several key supporting roles which are expected to be filled in the next few weeks. Amongst those roles is a new twist in the origin story of the character – Peter Parker’s biological parents.

What’s Playing reports that the characters of Richard and Mary Parker will appear in the film, likely in flashback or early scenes. This explains a casting call issued last month for a 4-6 year old male actor to portray a young Peter Parker, a casting call that has been amended to a boy aged 6-9 years old.

In comics lore, the characters were government spies who died in a plane crash when Peter was still an infant. One storyline cited them as being agents who work for S.H.I.E.L.D., the law enforcement agency headed by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in the Marvel films. In either case we’ll see how he came to live with Aunt May (Sally Field) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen).
