Sony Pictures has been tub thumping their collaboration with Marvel Studios, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” all week at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. A big part of that push has been Amy Pascal, the film’s producer and the former chief of Sony Pictures.
We also know that Sony is pursuing its own “Spider-Man” related projects with “Venom” and “Black Cat & Silver Sable” both in the works, films that will have no connection to the MCU or ‘Homecoming’
Now, in a surprising comment given during an interview with Cosmic Book News (via Gizmodo), Pascal revealed that the Marvel and Sony collaboration may be over after the already-planned sequel to ‘Homecoming’ is done. She tells the outlet:
“One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don’t have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often. In fact, it may never happen again – after we do the sequel.
Because Sony and Disney and Marvel all decided that the right thing to do was to allow Peter Parker and Spider-Man to be in the MCU, and to work with the Marvel guys and have them produce this film, and I think that was a very rare thing for three companies to do and a very brilliant thing for them to decide to do, because there are only so many stories that you know you can tell again and again and again about Spidey, and this is something that we would never been able to do in any other way. So, it was a very selfless thing that was very smart on the part of all the companies.”
Though Pascal is a producer on ‘Homecoming’, she doesn’t speak officially for Sony even as her production studio has an ongoing deal with them. She also could be simply negotiating in the press for the inevitable contract renegotiations that will likely have to be locked down before ‘Homecoming 2’ opens.
There’ll be no shortage of Marvel-approved Spider-Man in the near future though with the character to appear in ‘Homecoming,’ at least one of the two new “Avengers” films on the way, and a ‘Homecoming’ sequel.
That’s not the only strange thing regarding the film today as Lainey Gossip adds that Gwyneth Paltrow could make a cameo in ‘Homecoming’ and apparently did a one-off deal to reprise her Pepper Potts role for a brief appearance – a deal which they indicate Sony picked up the tab for.
There were of course reports that Paltrow would also appear in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Captain America: Civil War,” reports which didn’t pan out.
