Speech & Debate Film Planned

Overture and Blumhouse are producing a film version of Stephen Karam’s off-Broadway play “Speech & Debate” says The Hollywood Reporter.

The story centers on a high school drama queen who recruits a set of misfits to join the speech and debate club. The final product mixes biting comedy with free speech and coming-of-age themes in the vein of “Election” and “Juno”.

The play debuted last year at the Roundabout Underground in New York and Karam, who has never penned a screenplay, will adapt from his own work.
