Sony’s “Venom” To Be R-Rated Sci-Fi Horror

The news came the other week that Sony was moving forward with its previously shelved “Venom” movie which would shoot later this year for an October 2018 release.

Now, a new report at Collider indicates the script by Dante Harper (“Alien: Covenant”) has been dubbed an R-rated science fiction horror movie and looks to be resurrecting the studio’s old plan of a cinematic universe of the Marvel characters they own.

That list is namely a bunch of Spider-Man related characters, but all indications are Sony are deliberately not going to crossover with the MCU or elements from “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and any of its potential sequels. Instead it’s a darker and more adult spin on the cinematic universe formula than most in this field are attempting.

We saw a bit of this last week when the news came that “Thor: Ragnarok” screenwriter Chris Yost had been hired to re-write “Westworld” co-showrunner Lisa Joy’s script for a film involving Spidey comic characters Black Cat and Silver Sable. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce ‘Venom” and shooting is rumored to kick off this Fall.
