Sony Pictures and Sony Music have officially scored the worldwide rights to produce and distribute the documentary on Michael Jackson’s final concert tour reports the Associated Press.
As previously reported, “This Is It” will consist of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage shot while Jackson prepped to perform 50 concerts in London. “High School Musical”-director Kenny Ortega helms the film using material shot in HD in June at Staples Center and the Forum in Los Angeles.
Sony is paying concert promoter AEG Live and Jackson’s estate $60 million for the footage. Select sequences will be offered in 3D and an October 30th worldwide release date has been set.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff approved the deal Friday and announced his ruling Monday during a hearing. Jackson’s mother, Katherine, was given the opportunity to review the contracts and raise any objections, she declined to do so.
Under the terms of the contract, the film will be screened for Jackson’s estate and cannot include any footage that puts the superstar in a bad light.
