Sony Plans “Super Mario Bros” Cartoon?

Sony Pictures is reportedly pursuing a new animated film adaptation of the video game property “Super Mario Bros.” according to Buzzfeed.

“Spider-Man” film series producer Avi Arad is apparently trying to secure the distribution rights from Nintendo and confirms to the site that negotiations with Nintendo are “just the beginning”.

“Hotel Transylvania” director Genndy Tartakovsky was apparently suggested as a potential director for the new film, though reps for the filmmaker tell the site he is not involved.

No mention is made of rights issues or the fact that Nintendo has avoided film adaptations of their properties due to the disastrous results with 1993’s live-action take on the game starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper.
