Sony Plans An “El Chapo” Biopic

Sony Pictures has picked up the rights to the upcoming book “Hunting El Chapo” by Cole Merrell and Douglas Century with 3 Arts Entertainment (“13 Hours,” “Unbroken”) to produce a film adaptation.

The novel details the true story of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, the Sinoloa drug cartel boss who – in addition to being one of the most powerful crime lords of all time – had a knack for escaping his prisons. Last recaptured in 2016, he was then extradited to the U.S. in January.

A director is being sought. The project isn’t to be confused with Fox’s “The Cartel,” a fictional spin on El Chapo based on the novel by “Savages” author Don Winslow and which has Ridley Scott slated to helm..
