Sony Pictures Animation has won a heated auction for an animated movie pitch centering on emojis, the ideograms which are a key component of modern day social media correspondence.
Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis will co-write the project which Leondis (“B.O.O.: Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations”) will direct, and the pair have already storyboarded out a bunch of the film as part of the pitch. Sony beat out both Warner Bros. Pictures and Paramount Pictures for the project.
First hatched in Japan, emojis are now a worldwide phenomenon and – more importantly – aren’t copyrighted and thus public domain. There’s reportedly another emoji-related pitch about to be shopped around which is why Sony Animation moved so fast on this.
