Italian helmer Stefano Sollima (“Gomorra: The Mini-Series”) is in talks to direct “Soldado,” the upcoming sequel to Denis Villenueve’s acclaimed drug war thriller “Sicario” at Lionsgate.
Soldado, the Spanish word for soldier, will center on Benicio Del Toro’s character from the first film. Josh Brolin will also be back as a CIA agent who plays both sides of the fence, but Emily Blunt will not return.
Taylor Sheridan has penned the script for the follow-up with the hope that Denis Villenueve, who directed the first, can’t return for the sequel as he’s busy with the “Blade Runner” follow-up.
Shooting aims to begin this Fall. Basil Iwanyk, Molly Smith, Edward McDonnell and Thad and Trent Luckinbill will produce.
